Webern Kammerphilharmonie

The University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna has a strong tradition in creating orchestral skills for its students.

There are three orchestras at the University - Webern Symphony Orchestra, Webern Sinfonietta and Webern Kammerphilharmonie. “Varna Summer” will host the Kammerphilharmonie – a new chamber orchestra created as a permanent form for professional development of young musicians in cooperation with the Career Center at the University.
The Symphony Orchestra of the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna is almost as old as the university itself. Since its founding in 1812, the orchestra has cultivated the performance style and sound typical of Vienna.

To be accepted into the various Webern formations, students must already have experience playing in an orchestra and have extremely good technical skills. The various assignments of the orchestras include symphonic concerts with the great classic/romantic repertoire, projects with contemporary music, opera productions. The students at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna have benefited in the past from collaborations with such celebrated guest conductors as Riccardo Muti, Pierre Boulez, Franz Welser-Möst, Sir Colin Davis, Bertrand de Billy, Ralf Weikert, Claudio Abbado, Mstislav Rostropovich, Zubin Metha, amongst others.

Graduates – former members – of these orchestras make their mark on the characteristic sound of the international music scene: they are engaged by the major orchestras of the world, where in many cases they hold leading positions such as concertmaster or principal.

The University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna regards itself as a university combining “future with tradition”. The Orchestras of the University are the artistic culmination of this motto: future-oriented instruction coupled with an understanding of the traditional Viennese sound that is so highly appreciated the world over.
