Ivan Thirion
Born in Belgium in 1990, the young baritone was accepted into the Royal Conservatory in Brussels at the age of 17, where he studied under Belgian baritone Marcel Vanaud. After completing a Bachelor degree in Brussels, he joined the Geneva University of Music where he obtained his master degree with Professor Gilles Cachemaille.
His operatic debut was on the stage of Opéra Royal de Wallonie in Liège singing Papageno in Mozart‘s Die Zauberflöte. In 2009, following his success in this role, the theatre engaged him as l‘Ogre in Aubert‘s La Forêt Bleue and as Gazella in Donizetti‘s Lucrezia Borgia.
During the 2010/11 season, he sang Tomaso in Un Ballo in Maschera and Marcello in La Bohème at the Opéra Royal de Wallonie, and made his debut at the Opéra de Rouen as Papageno. From 2011-13, he was accepted into the CNIPAL Opera Studio in Marseille, where he appeared in many recitals and productions with collaborating French theatres such as Marseille, Avignon, Toulon, Nancy, Limoges and Bordeaux. Additionally, he performed Antonio in Le Nozze di Figaro in Liège and Charleroi and Monsieur Verdic in Ne criez pas au loup at the Opéra de Rouen.
Recent engagements include Figaro in Le Nozze di Figaro at the Opéra de Montpellier, directed by Jean-Paul Scarpitta, a cover of Don Carlo di Varga in La Forza del Destino in Liège, a recital and a performance in Benjamin Godard‘s La Vivandière at the Radio France Festival in Montpellier, as well as Lord Cecil in Donizetti‘s Maria Stuarda at Opéra de Liège. Ivan has always been a very active concert singer and recitalist, having performed in Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Bulgaria. In July 2013, he was awarded the „Wil Keune prize for a young singer with real potential“ at the 32th edition of the Belvedere Competition in Amsterdam and won the 2. Prize at the 2014 St Petersburg Opera Competition.
From 2014-16, Ivan was a member of the International opera studio of the Zurich opera, where he sang roles such as Ping (Turandot), Coryphee (Comte Ory), Lakai (Ariadne auf Naxos), Bello (La Fanciulla del West) and Rodomonte in Haydn’s Orlando Paladino.
Ivan’s most recent and upcoming guest performances include the role of Lord Enrico Ashton in Donizetti‘s Lucia di Lammermoor at Opéra de Liège, Bartolo in Der Barbier von Sevillaat the Salzburg Festival, a tour with the YSP of the Salzburg Festival to China, Serviteur and Aubergiste in Prokofieff’s L’Ange du Feu at Opéra de Lyon, Oronte in Charpentier’s Médée at the Zurich opera ( Conductor: William Christie), Le Comte de Toulouse (Verdi Jeruslem) in Liege and Freiburg and Belcore at the Aalto Essen Opera.
Ivan has been selected as the Belgian representative for the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition, being the first Belgian present in the final round since 30 years.
Ivan worked with International conductors such as Fabio Luisi, Marco Armiliato, William Christie, Kazushi Ono, John Fiore, Paolo Arrivabeni and with directors such as David Pountney, Giancarlo del Monaco, Andreas Homoki, Philippe Sireuil, Claus Guth….
