A documentary art exhibition by the State Cultural Institute Pancho Vladigerov House Museum – Sofia. Author: Nadya Sotirova | Design: Tsvetelina Panova

The exhibition was created to mark the 50th anniversary of the first production of theopera Tsar Kaloyan. It traces the story of the work’s creation and its performances by Bulgarian opera theatres in Sofia, Ruse, Stara Zagora, and Varna, as well as abroad in Bratislava and Ljubljana.

Vladigerov devoted nearly two years (1934–1936) to composing his only opera. For

the libretto, he enlisted the writer Fani Popova-Mutafova, who prepared a synopsis of the plot, while the poetic text and verse were entrusted to the poet Nikolay Liliev. The full orchestral score was completed on 26 January 1936, and the premiere took place at the Sofia Opera on 20 April of the same year.

The original cast featured Sabcho Sabev (1899–1950) in the title role of Kaloyan, Tsvetana Tabakova (1905–1936) as Tsaritsa Maria, and Petar Raychev (1887–1960) as Baldwin. The production was directed by Hristo Popov and conducted by Asen Naydenov.

Following its Sofia premiere, the opera attracted considerable international interest. Notably, during the Bratislava production on 30 January 1937, NBC (National Broadcasting Company) broadcast the first act live to the United States. With this broadcast, Vladigerov’s work became the first Bulgarian opera and likely one of the first European operas to be transmitted to America. Tsar Kaloyan was also staged to great acclaim in Ljubljana, where it premiered on 15 May 1937.

Subsequent productions in Bulgaria followed: in 1962 in Ruse, and in 1975 in Sofia and Stara Zagora, where the 1 March premiere was dedicated both to the composer’s 75th birthday and to the 50th anniversary of the Stara Zagora Opera. In the summer of 1978, the Varna Opera presented a new production conducted by Milko Kolarov, Vladigerov’s last student. This was the final premiere of the opera attended by the composer himself.

In 1987, and again in 1998, Academician Plamen Kartalov staged the opera in openair performances on the historic Tsarevets Hill, the natural setting of the plot, as part of the Stage of the Ages Festival, as well as in Sofia’s Alexander Battenberg Square. The most recent production, by the Stara Zagora Opera in 2025, was presented in July at the Ancient Forum of Stara Zagora and at the Stage of the Ages Festival in Veliko Tarnovo.

Thus, this vibrant musical-dramatic work has been preserved and continually reintroduced to new audiences over the decades, securing its place in the cultural memory of

Bulgaria and beyond.
