Milan and Vienna, as Europe’s important musical centers, shape the framework and internal movement of this Concert Spirituel. It brings together in a unique way two extraordinary figures in Italian music history—Antonio Vivaldi and Niccolо Paganini—in a journey where movements from the Venetian master’s The Four Seasons alternate with Paganini’s most virtuosic wonders, such as Le Streghe (The Witches) and I Palpiti. Оperatic arias add another dimension to the experience, telling the tale of those times.
Mario Hossen and the Virtuosi della Scala, with the special appearance of the soprano Natalia Stepanska, explore a century of European music history. They follow the Italian tradition from Vivaldi’s Baroque ‘theater of affects’ to Paganini’s Romantic instrumental drama. Vivaldi provides the theatrical basis, while Paganini sets the pinnacle where the instrument takes entirely the expressive power of the operatic voice.
Created by Mario Hossen with the support of the Paganini Society in Genoa within the frame of the ‘European Paganini Route’ initiative, this program, as presented at “Varna Symmer” festival, will be performed at La Scala in Milan, the Auditorio Nacional in Madrid, at the Concert Spirituel series in Vienna, as well as in Belgium, Germany, England and China.
