Orchestra with a mission
The home of The Austro-Hungarian Haydn Orchestra is in Esterhazy Palace, where the great composer they are named after had lived and created music. Driven by the mission of performing Haydn’s music in the best possible way wherever they can, they are regularly invited by the most prestigious halls across Europe and the world. Led by one of the best flutists nowadays, Philippe Benold for whom winning the Jean-Pierre Rampal International Competition opened the door to a brilliant career. Eliot Gardiner and Kent Nagano encouraged him to take the button and he proved them right by becoming a renowned conductor, not to forget the fact that Philippe Bernold is a chamber music professor at the Paris Conservatory. The program he chose to present in Varna begins with the beauty of two masterpieces – Mozart’s flute concerto and Haydn’s Farewell symphony. But that is not going to be a real farewell since there are two more pieces to be performed – by Giya Kancheli and Andrei Pushkarev. Pushkarev had for long been a part of the famous Kremerata Baltica and created many orchestrations for them. As a solo timpanist he could be heard in many projects (one of them is Grammy – winning) together with Yo – Yo Ma and Martha Argerich among others. The soloists are fabulous – Pavel Vernikov is a violinist from the highest places in music, winner of ARD Music competition and Vittorio Gui Prize in Florence, he has often been performing with James Gallaway and Svyatoslav Richter, teaching in Paris and Lausanne. He will play alongside Svetlana Makarova who had started her career with the first prize at the International Tchaikovsky Youth Competition in Moscow at the age of ten, an award that was followed by numerous other prizes and later was invited by Lorin Maazel to take up a position as concertmaster at the Palau de Les Artes Reina Sofia in Valencia, Spain. A concert with the finest among musicians and program that jumps from the masterpieces of the Viennеse classicism to the masters of the music of our time.
