Opera director Vera Nemirova presents Wagner’s brilliant classic in a contemporary interpretation characteristic of her style. The classic story of the sailor’s daughter Senta and her sacrifice that brings closure to the Dutchman condemned to wander between life and death, is now laced with contemporary topics such as the changes in our post-pandemic everyday life, the digitalisation of modern society and the selfie culture of today. The Dutchman communicates through a live video call while the multimedia on stage relates an additional distinct story from the main character’s childhood.
Vera Nemirova first presented this performance together with conductor-producer Svetoslav Borisov at the Magdeburg Theatre, Germany in 2017, while the improved Varna version offers a new crew and ideas, deeper character arcs, and updated costumes and set design in comparison to the earlier production.
